FAQs About Inflatable Paddle Boards

Simple answer: yes. Inflatable paddle boards are fantastic for many reasons. They’re incredibly durable, portable, and easy to store, which makes them perfect for both beginners and seasoned paddlers. Because of their design, they have excellent stability and comfort on the water, and you can take them anywhere—from lakes and rivers to oceans. Plus, it’s extremely convenient transporting them which always comes in handy.

No, not all paddle boards are inflatable. There are two main types of paddle boards: inflatable paddle boards (iSUPs) and hard or rigid paddle boards (SUPs).

Inflatable boards are designed to be easy to store and transport, while offering more or less the same performance as rigid paddle boards.

Inflating a paddle board is pretty easy Here’s what you need to do:

  • Start by unrolling your inflatable paddle board on a flat surface and make sure it's clear of sharp objects.

  • Connect the pump to the board’s valve. Most iSUPs come with a pump that has a hose attachment designed specifically for this.

  • Begin pumping. Most pumps have a gauge to show when the board is properly inflated. Aim for the recommended psi (usually 12-15 psi) for optimal performance. Do note that it will be easy to pump at first, and nothing will show on the inflation valve until the pressure reaches 7 psi.

  • Once the board is fully inflated, quickly remove the pump hose and seal the valve tightly to keep the air in.

  • Give your board a quick press to ensure it’s firm and ready for action!

And it’s done—you’re all set for a fantastic time on the water!

Contrary to what many people believe, iSUPs actually last a long time, with high-quality paddle boards easily going 5-8 years. However, how long your inflatable stand up paddle board lasts depends on good maintenance as well. Regularly cleaning the board, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and storing it properly keeps it in great condition.

If you’re looking for inflatable paddle boards for beginners, look for a board that's at least 32 inches wide. It allows better balance. Secondly, the length of the paddle board is really important. Most inflatable paddle boards are from 10 to 12 feet. A longer board goes faster so it is tricky to handle for beginners, while a shorter board is relatively easier to maneuver. If you’re new to paddling, a 10 to 11-foot board is a great choice. Another thing that can make paddling a more comfortable experience for new paddlers is to choose a lightweight board that's easy to inflate and carry.
